Job Description

The Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department strives to provide high-quality and cost-effective recreation activities for all residents of Boulder City. These programmed activities include workshops, labs, tournaments, camps and classes, as well as activities in aquatics, arts, golf, and special events. We are striving to meet the community’s recreational needs in all phases or our operation. The Parks & Recreation Director manages the day-to-day operations of the Parks & Recreation Department. The department was established in 1974 and is made up of three major divisions including the Recreation Division, Aquatics Division and Golf Course Division. The Parks & Recreation Director is responsible for coordinating all major special events within the city including film shoots and video productions. The following positions report to the Parks & Recreation Director: Parks & Recreation Manager, Recreation Program Coordinator, Youth and Adult Sports Coordinator, Aquatic Coordinator, Youth Center Coordinator, Fitness Center Coordinator, and Custodians.

Required Qualifications Strong senior management level background in providing high quality operation of a parks and recreation department including budget management. Current and comprehensive experience in developing strategic priorities, goals, and objectives, including establishing criteria to determine efficiency and effectiveness of a Parks and Recreation Department. The individual must have the ability to define the responsibilities, authority, and accountability of all direct subordinate managers and provide them with regular reviews and general guidance. This individual must also have the ability to effectively advise, coach, and mentor management and supervisory staff on leadership, training, safety, and disciplinary matters; develop training programs and provide effective and positive motivational leadership to Parks and Recreation Department personnel.

Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in parks and recreation management, Business or Public Administration or closely related field. Ten (10) years of progressively responsible parks and recreation administrative experience, five (5) years of which were at the supervisor/management level. Note: An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be considered. Must possess and maintain a valid Nevada or “border state” driver’s license, as defined by NRS 483. Must pass a nationwide fingerprint-based record check, and a wants/warrants check. Desirable: Master’s Degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Business or Public Administration or a closely related field. Desirable: Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) from National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) or other NRPA or professional schooling.
