The Recreation Specialist – Gym will officiate youth basketball games for kids in grades 1-5 and provide general oversight and supervision of sports leagues and programs.This position will also prepare courts for play, recruit volunteer scorekeepers, and assist with opening, closing, and cleaning the gym facilities.
Assignment Duration: This is a variable supplemental assignment. Multiple positions available. Maximum of 29 hours per week. Cannot exceed 1,040 hours per year.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the basic rules and procedures of recreation sports, including but not limited to basketball
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; follow verbal and written instructions; demonstrate good public relations skills; accurately make necessary calls or rulings for the game in progress; effectively deal with controversy; learn and enforce policies, procedures, and league rules
- Ability to work various schedules including weekdays, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to educate the public about facility rules, policies, guidelines, and safety standards
- Provide excellent customer service
- Demonstrate a positive attitude
Hours/Schedule: Work schedules may vary from week-to-week. Approximately 4-10 hours per week average, Saturdays (between 8am – 7pm). Additional hours may be available. Youth Basketball league training and games are scheduled from November through March.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Experience and Requirements:
- Minimum of 16 years of age by starting date
- Successfully passing of a required background check
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Licenses and Other Requirements:
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License and a driving record that meets city standards preferred.
- Must have or obtain valid First Aid and CPR certificates within two months of hire.
